Internet Connection Sharing problem (Dial-Up) - Despair is imminen

Posted: 08-20-2007, 02:26 PM
My learned colleagues,

Please help, I'm clutching at straws.

Scenario: 2 PCs [Vista Home & Ultimate] connected via crossover cable work
fine. The IPs on both PCs are set to DHCP and both can see each other on the
network, share files, PING, Remote Desktop etc. etc.

PC1 has working 56k modem. Dial-up connection is shared and configured to
make connection when any other PC on the network makes a request to connect
to the internet (I have also checked and un-checked the 'Allow other network
users to control or disable ICS' radio button). I have also enabled all ICS
services and configured them to use both the Hostname and then the IP of PC1.
From within Windows Explorer both PCs and 'Internet gateway device' are
visible when viewing the network.

PC2 has no working modem. From within Windows Explorer only the 2 PCs are
visible when viewing the network, but no Internet gateway device. When I
start IE or Outlook (i.e. make a request to connect to the internet via PC1)
nothing happens other than I am unable to connect to the internet.

I've been trying to track down any information I can and saw a brief mention
on one fo the preceding MS Vista pages about ICS and "High Speed" internet
connection... does that mean you can't share a 56k dial-up modem?

Is it possible to share a dial-up connection via a crossover cable like the
scenario I have just described above? If so, what am I doing wrong?

However, a moment ago I just noticed that when I click on the Sharing Tab
under my dial-up properties I see that the Home Networking Connection field
is showing 'Wireless Network Connection' and I cannot change it. My P2P
crossover network is always identified as 'Unidentified'.

How to I identify or name my unidentified network?

Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated, please.

Cheers,
Nick
