internet keeps dropping on static IP

windows XP pc used to be on dhcp from the router without
any problems, but it now needs a static IP. Since this
was configured on Friday, it keeps losing connection to
the internet several times a day. If I put it back on
dhcp, the connection returns and I can then put it back
on to static for an hour or two, before it goes again.
The NIC is still showing as "enabled" and I've changed
all the power settings to "always on" in case power
saving was knocking it out, but it's still happening.

For now, I've had to put it back onto dhcp but only
allocate 1 address to ensure the pc always gets the same
one. It may work for now, but that won't be any good when
we add more pc's behind the router.

Any suggestions as to what might be happening? all
settings are correct (subnet mask, DNS,gateway etc)

try going to dos and typing

ipconfig /release

maybe there's something that didnt fully release.
the ip address you gave it, is that outside of the DHCP scope of ip
addresses?

You'll still need DHCP on the router to assign local IP's to the machines.
The router itself will be assigned to the static IP.

Are you running Zone Alarm? I have a similar problem and have determined that Zone Alarm is blocking internet activity. If you ar using Zone Alarm, The next time you loose connectivity, shut down Zone Alarm and see if internet comes back.
