internet sharing windows XP

Posted: 01-22-2005, 07:01 PM
First of all, kindly forgive the crossposting. If I have posted to the
wrong group I apologise

(1) The "host" PC is brand new running XP (home) completely up to date with
SP2 etc
(2) The "client" PC is an old PC which has home edition SP1.

I re-installed windows on the PC 2, and have managed to set up my network
fine with the host PC. They can see each other on the network just fine. The
client can get to the documents I have enabled for sharing on the host PC,
and visa versa. Now my problem is that the client has no internet
connectivity. It can dial in to the internet with no problem, but it can not
access a page using IE, and if I try and use Norton Live update, it tells me
I am not connected to the internet. I have tried pinging the host from the
client, and I get a response. So my problem is why will IE not load any
pages?

I would be very grateful for any help offered.

Many Thanks

You need to set up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the PC that is
connected to the Internet. Control Panel | Network Connections, R Click
on the Internet Connection, select Properties and tell it to share.
This will change the IP of that PC to 192.168.0.1 so the other PC needs
to be in the same range.

If you used the XP Networking wizard then it's worth checking manually.
It does some really odd things and if it's running its inbuilt DHCP
will happily dole out IP addresses in different ranges to each PC on
your network :-(

Jeff. I have done all this. address on host is 192.168.0.1 If I do not
asign a static address, I lose the whole network. So I have to assign the
host 192.168.0.9

Thanks though

Any other thoughts

The host hast to be assigned 192.168.0.1 and the client machine should
be assigned a similar IP such as 192.168.0.100. Netmask 255.255.255.0
and a default gateway of 192.168.0.1. Your primary DNS should also be
set to 192.168.0.1. This should take care of the problem.
