internet userid password login

Every attempt to log into familiar places, my bank,
hotmail, work etc (on my XP machine) produces a
navigation/dns error message (internet optimizer). All
other inquries seem to work fine. Another machine running
windows 98 runs fine. It appears that some configuration
has changed but I cannot find it.
