Invisibility of JPEG and other picture files in My Pictures folder

My Pictures does not show some pictures I want to save in that folder.
Occasionally, I modify a picture from my camera, or save a cartoon, and put
it into My Pictures.
However, when I go to insert the picture into another document like an
email, or try to use it for my display screen, it is not there. The odd
thing, is when I do a Search, it shows up as being in the My Folders file,
exactly where I saved it. I have worked around this by copying the version I
found in Search to my Desktop, from which I can now paste it into my document
or use it for my display wallpaper.
My OS is XP.
Does anyone have a clue what is happening here?
