IP / DNS Addresses

Posted: 10-16-2003, 03:26 AM
I started to have a problem getting on the web or even networking other home
computers with my Home XP computer. I finally went to the DOS prompt and
did an "ipconfig" the IP and DNS addresses were blank or zero. I manually
entered some variant IP address in the from one of my other computer in the
TCP/IP properties and can now get on the web and see the other computers on
my LAN. Shouldn't the "obtain addresses automatically" be checked and not
have manually inserting those addresses? If so, how can I make that happen?

Thanks,
John

I'm running a 2-computer LAN off of a firewalled server (old P90
methinks). The server obtains IP automatically from Rogers and
internally is known as 139.139.139.1. The other two machines are
139.139.139.x (x = 1,2) with DNS and gateway set to 139.139.139.1.
Unless you have NAT(?) software that issues IPs to the LAN computers,
you would have to provide them manually.

Help?

I've never had to manually insert the IP address before. The obtain IP
address automatically has always been set. I don't think I should be
setting the DNS/IP addresses.

Thanks.
