IP in header real vs 127.0.0.1

Posted: 06-13-2007, 06:08 PM
How come the IP in my header sometimes shows the actual IP when posting here
and at other times it shows 127.0.0.1?

I'm not doing anything I'm aware of that is causing this.

Test reply to see which IP gets used.

I see you tried to make your point here, but I can't see any 127.0.0.1...
here... Maybe it's only your computer which shows this 127...

Look again, on one message is the header:

NNTP-Posting-Host: TK2MSFTNGHUB02.phx.gbl 127.0.0.1

and on another:

NNTP-Posting-Host: host86-154-130-0.range86-154.btcentralplus.com
86.154.130.0

So he has managed to post via two different servers, how I have no
idea.

I haven't a clue as to why this is happening.

However, the address 127.0.0.1 means "localhost" on every computer that is
connected to the internet. In short, it means your computer.

You will find this ip address in your HOSTS file.

Thanks, I sort of figured that, but it is still a mystery why my posts to
newsgroups randomly(?) use 127.0.0.1 rather than the real IP address.

I'm using Windows Live Mail as the news client and posting direct to
msnews.microsoft.com.
