Irritating pop-up messages

Posted: 07-03-2003, 12:56 AM
For the past few months I have been receiving an
increasing number of pop-ups in a window
labelled "Instant messenger"
These annoying pop-ups are mostly from software providers
(internet sites)informing me that such pop-ups are
provided using Microsoft Messenger and can be prevented
by purchasing and installing their software. The most
annoying thing about them is that these sharks claim to
be offering a solution to pesty advertisers when the only
such messages is from them- some 15 to 20 entities. I
sometimes have to spend a minute or so getting rid these
messages before I can use my computer. They sometimes
appear while I am using it.
Apparently this is unique to Windows XP (which I have)
and other contemporary operating sysyems.
Can I just delete the stupid programme that is causing me
all the grief of disable it?
Can anyone please help me???
I would appreciate it!!!

There are two cures to this problem, which isn't limited
to Windows XP.

Any Windows version that includes the Messenger service
(2000, XP, XP Pro, .NET (aka Whistler) or 95/98(SE) with
WinPopUp running) are vulerable to these pop-up messages.

The solution:
If you do not use Windows Messaging (this is different
than Instant Message programs, such as AIM or MS
Messenger), disable the Messenger Service under Services.

If you do use Windows Messaging: Install a router.

These pop-ups are the "latest and greatest" for internet
advertisers. With so many anti-pop-up programs available,
the advertising industry has been hard at work making
sure you get your daily dose of internet commercials.
With vitually every form of web/java based popups blocked
in one way or another, they "discovered" that the Windows
Messaging Service could be used to deliver ads to you in
the most annoying way possible. By disabling the
Messaging service you will see no more of these.
Likewise, by installing a router, you'll see these come
to an end as well.

Why? By disabling the Messenger service there is no way
to deliver pop-ups to your system. By adding a router,
you no longer have a public IP address (which is what the
advertisers feed to their end of the Messenger), but a
private IP address assigned by the router, which cannot
recieve these sorts of messages from outside the network
connected to the router, unless specifically allowed.

Pax is right, on some level, but two solutions is incomplete.
Why buy a router or disable the messenger service when you could install a
firewall (freeware) or use the built in one to block outside (incoming)
traffic and get the same results PLUS fix other problems at the same time.
Pax might call that "Option 3". heh Disabling the messenger service only
patches ONE hole. Leaves the others open wide and blaring for use!
