Issues with Windows Installation during Virtual PC Installation

Posted: 07-06-2005, 05:11 PM
Hello,

I was successful in installing virtual PC onto my Powerbook G4 (i.e.
steps 1 and 2). But on the 3rd step (installing windows), I was not
able to proceed (i.e. to install windows because the installation
program keeps telling me that the install disc cannot be found even
though the disc is clearly inserted in the Bay). Note that I am trying
to install the pre-configured version of windows that came with my
virtual pc installation disc.

During this installation of Virtual PC version 7.0, i too received the
A1004 error "Virtual Switch Failed to Load" - is this affecting the
installation of my windows environment?

Please advise. Thanks!

Andrew

Not sure about the first part, but it sounds like you're using the
wrong option to install the pre-configured image. Make sure that you're
using the second choice 'Install from a Virtual PC for Mac CD'. All it
does is find and decompress the image on to your hard drive. If this is
XP that you're installing, that will require a disk swap.

The second issue is easy. You're running VPC 7.0 or 7.0.1 on Mac OS X
Tiger. Update to 7.0.2.

You are correct. Without modifying the XP System Files CD that comes
with VPC and using XP installation disks, you cannot manually install
XP from the CD that comes with VPC.

Did you purchase a version of VPC that includes Windows? If you
purchased VPC with Windows, you'd get 3 cds, if you purchased VPC
without Windows, you would only have received one cd.

If you purchased VPC w/o Windows, you will need to supply your own
copy of Windows for installation.

Thanks for all the information!! This is very helpful!!

I purchased the Mac Office 2004 Professional edition, and I thought the
office professional edition came with VPC+Windows XP. ALAS, IT only
came with the office cd and the vpc cd. Judging from this thread, i
will need to get the Windows XP CD too.

THANKS AGAIN!

Office 2004 Professional does indeed come with Windows XP. There should
be *three* Virtual PC CDs, though in practice, you generally won't need
disk three.

Not all Office 2004 packages ship with Windows XP. There were two
separate promotional packages that contained VPC. The first contained
Windows and MS quickly corrected that mistake (cha-ching, cha-ching
$$$$$$) and began shipping the later packages without Windows.

According to MS's Website, Microsoft Office 2004 Professional, which is
what he asked about, ships with Windows XP Professional.
