I've deleted an audio file and can't get it back!

Hi all helpfull friends!
OK, my PC was crashing everytime I started it up and following the Help
instructions went through msconfig and turned off various services till I
figured out which one was making it crash. Seems a file starting with
"audio...." was the one. I deleted it and now things run just fine. I even
re-loaded Windows XP again and used a host of anti-virus and anti-spyware
devices to clean my whole PC to make sure. Actually, I suspect it was the 100
or so spyware programs which were really causing the problem.
NOW I have no sound. I'm starting up a webcam to talk to O/S friends and
obviously require sound. I have a C-media AC97 card which works fine when I
look at it in the Sound devices window. I've un-installed and re-installed it
but still no audio device.
How can I turn back on what I turned off before? What did I turn off/delete
before?
I've been working on this now for three hours and I'm going insane!
Thanks in advance

Just a guess - in XP there's a Control Panel you have to go to and make sure
XP is drawing sound from your sound card. I just bought an XP machine with a
Soundblaster card in it, and it was initially set to draw sound from the
motherboard's own integrated audio, not the Soundblaster card. Go to the
Control Panel and click on the Sounds icon. I must apologise I can't give you
better instructions; I'm not at my XP machine just now. Good luck! Go

Curtis,
Yeah, I'm thinking that its something to do with the motherboard. Can't
figure out how to make sure its taking the sound from the right source
though. Can't find anything in the Control Panel's Sounds section to tell me.
Any ideas?
