Janes FA -18

Posted: 11-06-2007, 12:13 AM
For the second time I have reloaded Vista Ultimate 64 No nothing wrong in a
major way here. Install went fine other than some weirdness with the mail.

Then I proceded to reinstall games almost all installed fine. Except for
JF-18. It is a Win-98 game. so far everyone with Vista has been able to get
the game to install fine. You do need to set run as admin in compatability
to play the game. mine is doing something weird. On loading the CD I get the
install splash screen. When I click install I get the UAC prompt and I
accept. Then I get the busy mouse icon for around 15-25 sec., then nothing.
I have tried running the setup.exe as admin and in win95/98/XP-SP2modes no
joy on all. Anyone have an idea??

Try copying the cd contents onto hard drive, then click on properties for
the installer, run as admin and maybe compatibility for XP?

Been forever since I played F/A-18, is that a DOS Game that runs in Windows
or is it a Windows executeable? I ask because Vista 64 doesn't run 16-bit
applications, does it?

Just checking, I can never remember what are the limitations of 64-bit
Vista.

You said everyone with Vista has been able to get the game to install, so
I'm guessing no one can get it to run? If that's the case, you might just be
out of luck. Old game, new OS... You migth download a copy of Virtual PC
2007, install Windows 98SE (Assuming you have a copy lying around) in that
and see if the game will startup that way.

Keep in mind 3D acceleration in Virtual PC is terrible, but it should at
least startup F/A-18.

Good luck,
A.

Andy,

F/A-18 is a Windows executable. Haven't tried to play it on Vista myself,
though - too busy playing rFactor and FSX.

Seems that the game has installed no problem for others. To run others have
set "Run as Admin"nd Win 98 Compat mode. It's got to be something on my
system.

When I put the CD in I get the splash screen for install. after I hit
install I get the UAC prompt. I accept then nothing. Stuck the disk in my
laptop (XP) to see if that was the problem and it ran fine. The even older
Janes F-15 install just fine go figure.

Disable User Account Control and try again. I had a couple games that
refused to install when UAC was enabled, but once disabled they installed no
problem. You can probably turn it back on again when you're done.

You're making me want to dig out my old thrustmaster stick, but alas I don't
have an analog joystick port on my PC anymore. Back in the day I traded a
case of Madden games for a F/A-18 (I think, it was huge with a real heavy
base) stick/throttle/rudder pack, something like $350 joystick. I know I
have it somewhere. Used to test Janes games for a while. reading all those
military manuals was really cool. I have a set of the documents somewhere.

ah!

Don't let auto-play install. Just cancel out of the install screen. The use
explorer to open the CD, find the setup.exe, or install.exe, and RIGHT CLICK
on it. Select "Run as Administrator" from the menu. This gives the app the
admin privileges and it should install fine, without any UAC messages later
when you run the game. (You will see 1 prompt from the install).

I do this for all of my old pre-vista apps, and they all install and run,
just like in XP, with no prompts and other incompatibilities.

Just be aware, this is almost exactly the problem with XP, where ever
program automatically installed with full admin privileges, and nasty viri
could conceivably hijack any exe you installed in such a way, and have full
access to your system. So the above mentioned install method isn't a habit
you should get into. As time goes on and more apps are written so they are
"vista aware", this method wont be needed. Until then its the best way to
run all your old apps. You get to keep UAC turned on, and you still aren't
bothered by incessant popups. As long as you run a firewall, and anti-virus,
the risk wont be any greater then it was with XP.
