| I have a clean install of Windows XP Pro on my PC. As near as I can tell, Internet Explorer does *not* have Java. I discovered this by going to a site that requires Java to run. Do I need to download the Java software from somewhere? Or, do I have to download something called the "Virtual Machine" (VM) for IE6 from somewhere? Thanks for your help. -- Jerry Rivers | Guest

| Greetings -- As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html. If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows Update to apply a needed security patch. gave me the link http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp to get the Sun "real" version of Java. It installed fine and I can now access the web site I need Java for in the first place. Can you tell me if there is a Microsoft security update patch for the Sun Java engine? I don't think the MS VM patch will work here. Thanks again. -- Jerry Rivers | Guest

| Greetings -- No, Microsoft cannot provide patches for any vulnerabilities that Sun's version of Java might have. You'll have to search Sun's web pages to see if any are necessary and/or available.
