That's correct, David. The software you're trying to install is not
supported in Windows XP. Just plug the controller in, then go into Control
Panel/Game Controllers and select Microsoft SideWinder (auto detect), and
the system will install the software for you.

The support for changing button assignments or saving profiles must come
from in-game Options, but otherwise, the controller should be just fine.

succesful fix thus far. My problem is that when I upgraded
my PC (from scratch) and loaded WINxp, my MS Sidewinder
Force Feedback Pro joystick is no longer recognized by my
FS2002 flight simulator game. The Game Controller shows it
(the joystick) to be operating normally and have had no
problems using it with my other flight sim games such as
CFS, CFS3, FS2000, Strike Fighter, IL2 Sturmvich, etc. In
the Option/Control of FS2002, the "Enable Joystick" select
is not highlighted. When I tried to reload the original
Sidewinder Game Controller (3.0) or the upgrade (3.02) I
get this warning that it is not compatible with my OS. I
have consulted with MS who manufactured the OS, FS2002 and
the Joystick but received no reply. I also consulted with
Creative (I have Creative Soundblaster Audigy sound card)
but to no avail. Perhaps one of you guys can help out.

Thanks

Don, the problem with the game port devices is the supporting software was
written in a .vxd format, which is not supported in Windows XP. There is no
update for that software. As for the FS recognition problem, hopefully
Microsoft MVP and flight sims Katy Pluta will pop in with a suggestion. I
run all USB controllers here, and haven't seen the issue.

>It's terminal I'm afraid. I had the same problem with my
Force Feedback Pro. When I shifted to WINxp from 98SE, my
FS2002 flight simulator game stopped recognizing the
joystick. I called MS tech support and they said that my
joystick is no longer supported. However, if you go on the
Web and go to Microsoft.Support/Sidewinder the system
requirement for the model 2 also only listed 98 and 2000
as compatable. I bought a Saitek Cyborg 3D instead and it
worked fine with all my games on XP.

I read recently that Microsoft has dropped all of its gaming devices from
their product line. They will only provide limited support for the
joysticks/gamepads/wheels/game voice (i.e..: warranty).

Depends on where that game port is located. If it is on your sound card,
then you probably need to update the drivers for that card from the
manufacturer's web site. If it is on your motherboard, then you need to
figure which product you're running and update from the manufacturer's web
site.

Most gameports use the Microsoft standard gameport driver in XP. This
driver is very limited an will not be updated.

If the device is third-party hardware such as a sound card, then the
manufacturer would be the one to supply the drivers. Microsoft doesn't
write drivers for any devices. The drivers included in the original,
October, 2001, XP release were furnished by the various hardware
manufacturers. As we've seen with the graphics card drivers, they didn't
even include OpenGL support until users updated.
