Default Keyboard problem using Vista and secure vpn

I'm using my Vista pc at home to log into my pc at work running XP. I am
connecting through a secure VPN, using a web address and IE 7. I can connect
okay, and am able to launch my remote desktop, however, when I am connected
the SHIFT key on my keyboard no longer works. Has anyone ever seen this
problem?
