| I would really appreciate if someone could help me resolve this problem. About two months ago I first started experiencing problems with my Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop when using its CD-RW Drive. The first evidence was when my system shut down and displayed one of those Microsoft Windows blue screens, reporting that my computer had experienced a "serious problem." I am running XP Home Edition. The laptop worked well other than when trying to use the CD drive, at which time the system would often lock-up. After numerous phone calls with Dell and several attempted solutions (e.g., system restores), a technician resolved that the system was experiencing a software problem and that I need to reload the CD software. I did so with Roxio Easy CD & DVD creator version 6, and the problem disappeared for a few days. Then another problem came. When I would put a CD into the drive, the drive would not recognize the CD at all. After another go-round, Dell technical support told me that my CD-RW drive must be bad, so I purchased a new Dell CD-RW / DVD combo drive. This drive experienced the same problem. Fortunately, I was able to send it back. I then took my laptop to a local technician since the laptop is about 16 months old and out of warranty. The technician reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition, and again the system seemed to work fine for a few days. Then, my computer started locking up again when using the CD Drive. I got a blue screen with the following error message a few days ago: BCCode : 100000ea BCP1 : 81268680 BCP2 : 815F3008 BCP3 : 81788B38 BCP4 : 00000001 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 0_0 Product : 768_1 More recently, I got the folling Windows error signature: BCCode : 100000ea BCP1 : 813C0520 BCP2 : 81374150 BCP3 : 817666A0 BCP4 : 00000001 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 0_0 Some important things to note are that the laptop works fine when not using the CD-Drive. For instance, I can remove the CD-Drive and put the floppy drive in its place, and there are not apparent problems. Also, as I've experimented, I've noticed that the computer seems to lock- up or get an error when I try to move the cursor (using the touch-pad, pointer, or serial mouse) when a CD is in the drive. If I don't use any of these devices, the computer doesn't seem inclined to lock-up. For instance, today I played the first three tracks of a music CD with no problems, and the system did not lock up until I tried to use the mouse. Thanks for your help! Sincerely, Dave | Guest
