latest install hangs -likely problem process bootstrap.exe

trying to upgrade from 4.7 to latest version in xp
professional. the setup just hangs midway. from task
manager I select the setup application MSN Messenger 6.2
setup and select goptopprocess. it takes me to
bootstrap.exe

can anyone help ?
