lexmark 1020 color jet printer: driver fails on windows xp

I have installed the lexmark 1020 color jet printer (lp1
port) on windows xp with the default driver and I cannot
print any document. The paper stops just before print
begins and the printer's light are flashing continuously
and in alternance.
I have tried printing from command prompt and it worked (%
echo hello > lpt1).
The driver seems to be the problem. I have also tried
installing lexmark's supposed updated driver for windows
xp, but same results...

Anyone have a clue for me?! :-/
