Licensing Questions

Posted: 12-21-2005, 03:07 AM
I am trying to come up with a solution to a performance problem with a
new product I'm designing and just had a strange thought which prompts
2 questions.

1) I think the XPe Licence covers up to 2 processors. Is this correct?

2) If the answer to #1 is yes, does that mean We could put 2 complete
motherboards/HDDs in one device? This would still appear to the user as
a single device.

The reason I am considering this is that 2 cheaper SBCs would gain us
the performance and features we are looking for at a better price than
one high spec board.

This would add other complications for communication etc. but I think it
would be just viable (at least worth looking into further) as long as we
don't
need two XPe licences per device.

Hi Mike

According to the Additional Licensing Provisions for XP Embedded, you are
correct, the XPE License does allow for up to two processors. Below is an
excerpt from the additional licensing provisions. You should check with your
local distributor for more information.

DEVICE CONNECTIONS. The SOFTWARE may not be used by more than two (2)
processors at any one time on the DEVICE. You may permit a maximum of ten
(10) computers or other electronic devices to connect via Server Message
Block (SMB) to the DEVICE to utilize one or more of the following services
of the SOFTWARE: (a) file services, print services, (b) Internet information
services and/or (c) remote access (including connection sharing). The ten
connection maximum includes any indirect connections made through
"multiplexing" or other software or hardware which pools or aggregates
connections. This ten connection maximum does not apply to other uses of
the SOFTWARE. Unlimited simultaneous inbound connections are permitted via
TCP/IP.

Thanks Jeff. I'll ask DST but have a feeling that they won't know the
answer. Asking Microsoft Austalia is also unlikely to be productive
as they hardly even know that XPe exists. :-) My previous calls to them
about XPe have been a great waste of time.
