Linksys BEFSR41 & WinXP Pro VPN setup

Posted: 07-04-2003, 10:32 PM
I have a BEFSR41 Linksys router working with a DSL static
IP. I am setting up 1 PC running WinXP Pros as a VPN
server that sits behind the router and I want to access
the VPN server from the internet (remote location PC)using
a WinXP Pro PC running VPN client.
1.- How do I set up the router?
2.- What protocols do I need to be running on the PC's and
the router?
3.- What IP address do I use on the VPN server?
4.- What IP address do I tell the VPN client to look for?
Anyother info thaqt you thing would be usefull and URL's
for help would be a blessing.

I understand how to setup IPSec and TCP/IP but really
unsure which IP address is being requested for the VPN
server. Do I put the static IP I recieved from my ISP on
the server and have the VPN client look for that IP or do
I put in the subnet IP of the server as static and have
the VPN client look for that IP?

First look at this page for help setting up the XP VPN server.

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networ...vpn_server.htm

For PPTP VPN you need to...

1. Enable "PPTP Pass Through" on the routers "Filters" page. That is on page 64 of the manual.
2. Forward TCP Port 1723 in the "Port Range Forwarding" page. That is on page 65 of the manual. Use
the private LAN IP of the VPN server, ie. the 192.168.x.x address.

TCP/IP is the default protocol.

Call using the public IP of the router. Get that from the "Status" page or using the
http://www.whatismyip.com site. Since you know you have a static IP your good to go...
