local file system / directory browsing?

local directories, if, and only if, I click on the down
arrow next to "Look In" in the file open dialog. This is
happening consistently regardless of which application I
am in, i.e. excel, outlook, ms word, etc. etc.
Also, I am fairly patient with minor delays, etc.,
however this occurance usually freezes up the application
that I do it on, for at least 1 1/2 minutes, and often
longer. Eventually it comes back and browsing is fine
after that.
Any insight would be appreciated.
