Default Local profile and passwords

I have a user that had .pst, files etc. in a local
profile. They joined a domain with the PC, and didn't
remember their old local account password (it's actually
more complicated than that, but that's the crux of the
situation). It was changed via the admin account.
Question, is the data int hat folder lost, or can it be
recovered? If it can be recovered, will an ntfs boot disk
work?

Thanks
Jamie
