Lost User Password for iMAC

Posted: 01-21-2006, 04:14 AM
One of my client lost his user login password. But, I know the
Administrator
(root) password. How can I login to the system using the Administrator
login account when the "Administrator" is not listed on the login
screen?

For example, in Windows XP, I can press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice and a login
screen will popup
where I can login to the system using the Administrator username and
password.

Hello, this might help you:

Reboot while holding down command and S.
This will boot up OS X with a Unix screen, and welcome to single user mode!

From there, it should be fairly easy to tweak things.

Take a look, if need be, at
http://www.westwind.com/reference/OS...ngle-user.html
and

Just boot the Mac off of an Operating Disk Install CD / DVD or
"Apple "Restore" disk.

After booting - do not install anything.

Instead ~ find the menus on the top of your screen display. You will
easily select a utility that permits you to change the administrative
password on the Mac. I think that it has the perfunctory name "Change
Password" or "Password Utility" depending on the disk in question.

You should be able to "Go Back" to a log-in window that just displays
fields for name and password entry instead of the usual user-icon menu.

(Note that there's a big difference in privileges between an
Administrator account and root: the former is more like a Windows "power
user".)
