hooked my "old" Infinity speakers up to my new computer
and I can only get a low volume out of them. This is
music and everything else. Checked all the volume
controls I can find. I can control the volume but max is
real quiet.

The Volume Control can be accessed by the following method:-

1. Click Start, then All Programs

2. click Accessories, then Entertainment

3. Click Volume Control

4. Check that the Master Out and Wave Out mixers are not muted or
turned down too low. If they are, please make the necessary adjustments and
ensure that your speakers are powered on and correctly connected to the back
of your computer.

I cannot turn the volume up to a good hearable level on
my new Dell. All volume controls are at a maximum but
still can barely hear. I am still using POLK speakers
from my old HP PC. Do I have to use the speakers from
Dell or should mine work?

It depends. There's a few simple ways to see if it's just the speakers.
(1) Get another pair from afriend or around the house and try them (2) Get a
simple pair of headphones and see if they offer louder sound. If either of
those two work then you be know that it is just the speakers. I have an
old pair of speakers that came with a Compaq PC that had a volume control
knob on the monitor, and not the speakers. These can not be used with other
PC's or devices because the volume can't be turned up on the speakers.

I USE NET TO PHONE AND HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HEARING THE OTHER SIDE ON WIN XP. WHEN I USE WIN 98 WHICH IS INSTALLED ON THE SAME MACHINE, I CAND HEAR THEM PERFECT. ALSO, I CONNECTED AN EXTERNAL WALKMAN MY COMPUTER THROUGH THE "LINE IN" JACK. WHEN I PLAY THE CD ON WIN98 IT IS GOOD. IF I PLAY IT ON WIN XP, KEEPING THE SPEAKER VOLUME THE SAME, I SOUND IS VERY LOW.
NOTE: I HAVE A BUILTIN SOUND CARD

Don't shout !

Make sure you have the correct XP specific drivers for your soundcard
installed on your XP partition. Then when in Xp, double click on the
loudspeaker icone in the systray and make sure the volume slider is all the
way up in fact push them all up to the max.

I would DOUBLE CHECK to be sure that you have your speakers plugged into the
correct jack. Many sound cards will give sound even if in the Mic Jack. So
double check to be sure you plugeed into the correct jack. I would lay my bet
there.
Did you open the Voulm control? if so did you increase all of the Sliders
to about 90%?
