Lucent Win Modem Driver

My modem driver is faulty. An update is available at
http://agere.com/support/ for it. My computer keeps
having these "mini" crashes. Everytime it happens an
error report is sent to Microsoft. They recommened that
I either look at their software updates for the driver
and if not go to the aforementioned website who makes the
driver. Basically, Agere Corp says there is no testing
between Windows XP and the driver update. I had to stop
my download in the middle because a dialogue box popped
up saying that the update might cause serious errors and
destabilze my system. No testing had been done on the
compatibility of the fix with Window XP. I really need
this update and was wondering if anyone else with Windows
XP downloaded the Lucent WN modem driver and found it to
be sucessful? Monica
