How much RAM does your computer have?
What specific applications do you have open when the performance
drops? Access can be quite demanding, especially if the
report/database is quite large.
Download the free page file monitor utility from
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm or from
http://billsway.com/notes_public/WinXP_Tweaks/ and run it periodically
to check on how much, if any, active memory pages have been moved from
RAM to the page file so that RAM could be used for other, currently
more important, uses.
If the actual page file usage is reported as 50 mb or more then that
is indicative of a fairly high level of paging activity. Adding more
RAM will reduce or perhaps even eliminate this usage, thereby
improving performance.
Good luck
