I have a software package that installs and works fine under XP but
the install fails under Vista. Is there a way to make this install
script work?

Most software designed for WinXP will install and work quite easily on
Vista, but there are, as you've sadly discovered, exceptions to this
generality. The method I've used with the most consistent chance of
success is as follows:

1) Copy the installation folders/files to the Desktop, or to within a
newly created temporary folder on the Desktop.

2) Open the folder created, and right-click on the installation
executable (usually Setup.exe), select Properties > Compatibility, and
elect to run the file with WinXP compatibility.

3) Once the installation completes (assuming this method works, of
course), you can delete the folder created above.

If this method doesn't work, you'll need to contact the maker of
application in question to see if they have provided either a patch to
make their application Vista-compatible, or a work-around installation
method. Unfortunately, however, some software makers would prefer you
buy a newer version of the product, rather than provide such assistance.
If this proves to be the case, you're options are pretty much reduced
to zero; I'd recommend obtaining and switching to an equivalent,
preferably from one of the first company's competitors. Some companies
pay attention only to the bottom line and market share, rather than to
customer support.
