making a dvd from .mov files

Posted: 01-16-2006, 09:27 AM
As described, I'm trying to make a movie from .mov files from my Kodak
camera. Firstly, can I say thank you to this forum for providing such a help,
just by using the search facility?

I have just got a media center PC, so hadn't used MM before. This forum told
me that I could use Nero Vision Express to convert .Mov files to mpeg for
importing into MM. This worked, but the problem was I was very disappointed
by the loss in quality - can anyone help?

Nero had 3 options - VCD (MPEG1), SVCD (MPEG2) and DVD. The VCD was the
lowest resolution, but seemed to be the only one that MM could import - the
others seemed to lose the video or sound when I tried to view it in MM. Does
anyone know if there is a way round this?

'9. Does Nero support QuickTime (MOV)?

We do support QuickTime 4 (MOV) files for VCD/SVCD formats in Nero/Nero
Express. If the MOV file is created with any other version of QuickTime, we
can not support it.

NeroVision Express is supporting this format since version 2.1.0.3.

Important note
For SVCD to work with MOV files, you must have our MPEG-2/SVCD or MPEG-2/DVD
Encoder installed on your system. These plug-ins have to be purchases
separately. If you would like to purchase one, please visit our online shop
for information and pricing.'

I thought the files were OK in Media Player though - I'm starting to doubt
myself.

I am not sure where you read in this forum to use Nero and convert to MPEG
for importing into WMM but that was incorrect information. You do need to
convert the MOV files but you want to convert them to AVI not to MPEG as
MPEG files tend to cause problems in Movie Maker. For information as well as
which programs are out there for this you can visit this site:
http://www.videohelp.com/convert
AVS Converter is the tool I use for such conversions and you can get that

I have seen that, if I rename .MOV files to .AVI, then Movie Maker will take
them in as is. Is this true, and if so, are there any downsides to that?

I haven't tried it. I know you can sometimes change extensions on image
files and Movie Maker will work but I doubt it would work with MOV files. It
is easy enough to try and find out though.

I just tried it with an .mov that was made with my Kodak camera and it
didn't work. Gave me a codec error, though, instead of an "unsupported file"
errror.

Thanks Rach, I didn't think that would work.
That leaves conversion as the only option then.

I just had a thought that, since I can view the .MOV files on my PC with
Media player and in Media Center, that I probably had the codecs necessary.
Therefore, if I can persuade MovieMaker to open the .MOV files, it may be
able to decode them. Hence the renaming to .avi, in the hope that it will
overcome any file extension checking. I must get to my PC at home to test it.

Can you view your .MOV files in Media Player?

you need to convert MOV files to AVI before using in Movie Maker... see the

Re: making a dvd from .mov files

And if you rename them AVI then what do you use to make a DVD. I'm sorry to
inject into this conversation but I'm not having a great successful day with
these files. I'm learning though I hope. I have to somehow get NeroVision
Express which I thought I downloaded on my old hard drive that crashed. I
made one DVD using it before the crash. UGH!
