Malfunctioning 'uninstall' in HP Upgrade Assistant DVD

steps on the Upgrade Assistant DVD which must be completed before one can
insert the Vista DVD to upgrade. The window says the computer is
uninstalling all noncompatible software, but it never stops running. (I
already uninstalled the antivirus software as instructed earlier.)
Went back the the whole process again: Same thing happened. At this point
you can't bypass or go forward. Called tech support; that was a huge waste
of time!!!
Any suggestions? Thanks.
