I'm prolly late with this but the free ISOs are finding
their way to the mirrors:

Yes.. This doesn't show up on the Mandriva mirrors page,
(not yet anyway) but the ISOs have been placed on most if
not all the official mirrors.

I guess the announcement will be coming soon..

Here's one site you can grab the ISO images..

ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake...o/2006.0/i586/

Just to add.. go to *any* of the mirrors and navigate to:

linux/Mandrakelinux/official/iso/2006.0/i586/

.... and you should find the ISOs there.. They should
be all the same since they're mirrors :-)

Where there's smoke there's mirrors :-)

OK. Failed attempt at humour but I use 2 days of hangovers as an excuse!

/me wonders if the plebs will get access to Gnome 2.12. It might tempt
me back from Ubuntu.

Great! Having a DVD is a *lot* easyer than installing with FTP. At least
- thats the case with a few friends of mine whom only posess a dial-in

Niceof them (Mandriva) to take £40 off me last night then!

I'm downloading all the variants now (DVD\ CD versions of 32 bit & 64 bit
variants).

Or is the (paid for) Powerpack a better version? It did say I'd get free
packaged installers for ATI\Nvidia cards - is all that in the free version
too?

That said, I don't grudge them a few sheckles - this thing didn't put itself
together...

It the same version, except for the fact it has third party
software/drivers already installed (like Skype, Acrobat Reader, NVIDIA
drivers e.g). You're quite free to download and install these yourself:
the NVIDIA's graphic drivers are freely available from their site. It's
a bit more work, but not very hard in any way. Installing Skype is
simply a matter of downloading the package from skype and using urpmi to
install it.

Personally I haven't found the differences to be big enough to buy a
membership. For someone who "simply want it to work" the Powerpack might
be a better option.

Yes, I have installed Nvidia drivers for earlier versions of Mandrake in the
past, and while it's a bit of a pain, it's not so bad.

I have used free versions before, but I did also purchase an earlier
version - may have been as long ago as 7.1 or 8.1.

I don't mind paying a bit for the distro as these guys have to eat! Anyway,
I paid a lot more for Windows XP.

That said, I'm not having a go at anyone who chooses to use the free
version. Each to his own.

Regards

Martin

"Easier"? As far as difficulty, it only takes a little more typing (the URL,
directory..) to install via FTP. It would take a very long time using a
dial-in, but using a high speed connection, it can actually be FASTER
(because only what is to be installed is downloaded).
