Mandriva Discovery 2006 vs Free 2006

Posted: 11-25-2005, 12:31 PM
Hello all,

This is probably the dumb question of the day but here it goes...

What is the difference between Mandriva Discovery 2006 and Mandriva Free
2006.

I recently joined Mandriva club at the silver level and presume
Discovery comes with extra support.

Is this so? If so, would someone please list a couple of examples?

As alway, thanks for your help.

Dave

The free download (3 ISOs for burning your own CDs) contains only the
"Free and Open Source" software, not the proprietary or commercial drivers
or plugins and codecs. You can add those other packages later if you
wish, via the Club members' download source or from elsewhere - but you
still don't get the book or any of the free or discounted subcriptions.

What you get in the 'Discovery' boxed set (44.90 Euro):-

| [...]
| Content
|
| 32-bit and 64-bit version ( 2 x 3 CDs) - new 64-bit version!
|
| Live CD
|
| A "redesigned" manual: Discovering Mandriva Linux
|
| 25% discount on Silver and above Club membership included in the box!
|
| Services
|
| 1 free month of web-based technical assistance
|
| 1 free month Mandriva club membership - Silver level (switch from
| standard to Silver level)
|
| 1 free month Mandriva Online subscription
| [...]
'-----
..---<http://store.mandriva.com/product_info.php?products_id=285&language=en>
| [...]
| It includes commercial software (Flash/Java plugins, JDK, etc.) and
| non-free drivers (Nvidia and ATI video cards) with an auto installation
| system.
| [...]
| Also includes popular plugins: RealPlayer10, FlashPlayer 7, Adobe
| Reader7
| [...]

Side comment: your munge of your e-mail address is ineffective. If you
don't want to use something like davandem@invalid.invalid (which will stop
at source any attempts to e-mail you), or use a 'disposable' address for
newsgroups only, then see the munge FAQ
<http://www.faqs.org/faqs/net-abuse-faq/munging-address/>

story made short:

Free is free in both ways (as in speech and as in beer)
Discovery is not free as in beer, and contains non-free drivers and
applications (as nvidia driver, java ...) which can also be installed in
the Free version if you manually download them and install them (or
urpmi them).

Since you are a silver level club member I would get the power pack set
if you have a broadband connection. Discovery does not include any
developement tools you would need if you want to install tarballs or
roll your own kernel etc. You would have to download these separately.
The mandriva site will have a comparision chart for what you get with
Power Pack vs. Discovery.
