Mandriva-Linux-Powerpack-2006x86_64 Hangs

Posted: 11-27-2005, 09:36 PM
Hello,

I just did a fresh load, on CDs, of the Mandriva-Linux-Powerpack-2006x86_64.

Each time I try to install software through the Mandriva Linux Control
Center the system hangs on "Verifying package signatures."

I am running an Atholon 64 +3100 process, 1 GB of RAM.

Any ideas?

Should I go with the discovery package? (I'm still relatively new to Linux)

Thanks for the advice.

Dave

Stay with the Powerpack.

First, make sure you have all of the mandrake rpm keys, installed.
See http://groups.google.com/group/alt.o...7?dmode=source

Then, try running the install applications, from a console (as root) ...

In a new, empty directory, run
wget ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributio...-1mdk.i586.rpm
rpm -i *.rpm

This will tell you if rpm is working properly.

If that's ok, try an install using urpmi...
urpmi -i kdeutils-kgpg
If that's ok, try running
rpmdrake
and select a package to install. Switch back to the console, to see if any
error messages are generated.

Post back, with your results.

Switch User Causes system to hang
Posted: 11-29-2005, 10:35 PM
I reloaded powerpack.

That seemed to solve the first issue.

Now when I try to switch user:
1. If I user the switch user on the menu bar I can start a new session
but it doesn't switch back to the first
2. and if I use ctrl, alt, F7 the screen goes weird and the system locks
up. I have to poser cycle.

I just built this system with an Atholon 64, 1 GB of Corsair RAM,

Thanks for you help.

Good!

I don't normally use multiple sessions. I just tested this using the kde
menu/switch user option, and can confirm, that for me the switch user, after
starting a second session, does not do anything.
This is with kde 3.4, and kernel-smp-2.6.12.13mdk-1-1mdk.2006.SoS.i586.rpm.

Can someone running kde 3.5 test this?

Most likely either an xorg, or video driver issue. I've updated to the
http://seerofsouls.com/rpms.php?dir=RPMS-2006 version of X11, so while it
works for me, using alt, f7/f8, I can't confirm it works with the stock
Mandriva version of X11 on the i586. Unfortunately, seerofsouls does not
seem to have 64bit versions of the rpms it carries.

Which video card are you using?
> I just built this system with an Atholon 64, 1 GB of Corsair RAM,
Did you install the i586 kernel, or the x86_64 one? I strongly suggest
using the i586 versions, until third party support of the 64bit platform
becomes more common. See the thread http://makeashorterlink.com/?T4EB53D3C
for a recent discussion on this.

Dave,

Thanks again, for helping me work through these issues. I am a real newbie.

I have the video and multiuser sessions working. I had a problem with
the video card set up. I used a combination of your emails and my
O'Reilly references to solve. Thanks again.

I will say though, that I am a little disheartened by the post you
referred me to in regards to using the x86_64. I just built this PC for
the experience, and now am thinking I could of saved myself a couple of
dollars by getting a 32 bit processor. (I guess that in and of itself
is part of the "experience").

Will I have to do a complete rebuild of the system to get on the x86_32
OS? Or can I get away with some other less painful technique?

I am running:

processor: Athlon 64 3000+
MB : MSI NF4 K8N NEO4-F RTL
video: VGA Radeon X300SE
MEM: Corsair D400 512MX2

KDE version: 3.4.2
QT version 3.3.4
Kernel 2.6.12-12mdksmp

Thanks again for all your help.

Dave

As mentioned in the thread, 64 bit systems are good, if all of the
third party packages you want to run, are supported. Most server
packages are ok, but many desktop applications are not ready (for
example, flash browser plugins). Unless you're regularly running
cpu intensive applications, that do work in 64 bit mode, you shouldn't
notice much of a performance difference.

I'm still not clear whether you are running a 32 bit kernel or 64 bit.

What does "grep kernel /var/log/rpmpkgs" show (i586 or X86_64)?

grep x86_64 /var/log/rpmpkgs should give you a list of all 64 bit
rpm packages that you have installed.

You should be able to switch to a 32 bit kernel and i586 versions
by setting your urpmi sources to the i586 directories, and the
reinstalling all of the packages shown in the prior step. It
may be easier, at this point, to reinstall.

As I've never done an install on a 64 bit system, I don't know if
the standard install gives you the choice of versions to install,
or how to force it to go with the 32bit versions.
