Mapping Drives

We're seeing problems at our remote locations with mapping
drives. When trying to connect to the drive with XP it
times out, or locks the PC. With W2K is works fine. Any
thoughts?

Since purchasing new machine and going to WinXP
Professional from win2000 we are all experiencing
problems with mapping drives. If the user logs in to
quickly from the ctrl+alt+del screen it will not map the
drives. Each user has a user directory on the server
with a logon script to map a personal drive and community
folder on the server. Is there some sort of registry
hack to force it to load this task first.

There sure is, Jason -

I'd fix it with a local or domain policy -

Enable the "Always wait for the network at computer
startup and logon" policy setting.

This setting is in the Computer
Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon node
of the Group Policy Object Editor (gpedit.msc)

Mapping Drives

I am having an issue mapping drives from a windows xp
workstation to the windows terminal server.

Background: Windows XP workstation located in Montreal
with a VPN Connection (PPOE Internet Connection) to
Edmonton Server Windows NT Terminal Server.

The user can use ICA client to connect to server and can
also display the shares on \\172.24.1.2 but stops
responding when you try to do browse on any of the shares.
There is a Windows 98 workstation which has no problem
mapping the drive or browsing the shares on \\172.24.1.2

I can map a drive in dos to \\172.24.1.2\Data and i can
browse this mapped drive in dos with no problems.

I cannot map a drive in Windows and if i try to use the
drive i mapped in dos i get this error:

"\\172.24.1.2\Data is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server, to find out if you have
access permission.

The specified network name is no longer avialable."

I am really stuck and have no idea why it would work
properly on windows 98 and dos but not in windows xp.

Any ideas.

Using 1 98, 1 2000 and 1 xp machine is it possible to map my drives directly
to each program such as Word, Excel etc. or can I only map to My Documents
and then have to hunt from there? Thanks for any tips.

or Excel remotly?

No. I keep the icons for the various programs I have installed on the Quick
Launch toolbar and I want each program to open directly to folders
associated with that program.

For instance, if I click the icon for Excel I want Excel to open to My Data
Sources instead of My Documents. Is that possible?

The only way I know of to do this is by changing the
local path of each programs in there Options menu for
each users.

I don't think there is a domain policy for default paths
of applications.
