MARGINS CHANGED IN DOCUMENTS & PRINTER CAPABILITIES?

After a series of software problems related to the
installation of an upgrade of Norton, I ended up having
to take everything off the computer, reformat the hard
drive, and start over, this time purchasing Windows XP
Home edition (had been in Windows 98 previously) -- after
downloading updated software for all the hardware (like
the printer) it seems that none of the documents
previously formatted and saved prior to these escapades
will open up... If I'm working in Word Perfect, when I
open a document it says that the document was originally
formatted for an HP 2000C printer, and that it is
reformatting the document for an HP 2000C printer... then
it proceeds to change all of the formatting in the
document... I finally discovered that part of this was
related to MARGINS, and that the computer will no longer
allow me to have a 1/2 inch margin on all sides of the
page, even if I manually change it in the software ... in
fact,Word Perfect will not allow a bottom margin of less
than 0.613 now, and yet, it says that I could have a top
margin as little as 0.04 which is not physically
possible ... even in my Calendar Creator program,
calendar formats that I have used for years are coming up
with messages saying that the printer cannot support
these margins...
I don't understand what is going on? Is it Windows? Is
it the updated HP software I downloaded going beserk?
Is there anything I can do? I'm so frustrated after days
and days and days of computer problems, I just cannot
even believe that all of these hundreds of documents I
have backed up can't even be used any more without
reformatting them...
Help! Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be
GREATLY, GREATLY APPRECIATED.
I'm using an IBM ThinkPad that was donated to our non-
profit, and I'm wondering if these glitches may also
relate to the laptop in some way... had to install a new
BIOS operating system to get the new Windows to
download...
Thoughts?
