"mark" a portion of an image?

Posted: 04-24-2004, 07:09 AM
I do not know whether "mark" in the subject line is the proper word for
my problem but hereunder is what I need.

Please guide:

I located an rear group photograph of my ancestors from old files /
books of my father. I want to share it with other family members by
sending its scanned copy. I want to give some sort of markings say
arrows or circles or any other shape indicating the person(s) who
has/have been related to us. Otherwise without these it would not be
possible for them to know who is who.
Is there any software to do that? Free would be a premium.

If a simple line, circle, square, etc...would suffice...
you can do that in MS Paint. Just go to...Start button /
All Programs / Accessories / Paint.

Go to...File / Open...and browse to the image you
wish to edit.

There are several buttons at the bottom of the left
panel that allow you to create various shapes and
lines. (Choose a color from the palette at the bottom
of the screen)

Also you can add text if you click the "A" button
and then left click /drag a box for the text. The
button at the bottom of your left panel (after
clicking the A...will make your textbox transparent)

If you create something by mistake...go to...
Edit / Undo...to remove it.

When you are done...go to...File / Save As...and
give your project a new name...this will insure that
you do not overwrite (replace) your original.

Thanks for your detailed guidance.
Other than MS Paint there should be program(s) that could also do
similar or advanced 'markings'. But they won't be I suppose a freeware.

You're welcome.

Seems to me that MSPaint is perfect for the purpose
you described, but of course there are many programs
that can do the job. Here are a couple of freebies that
may have features you can use.

Serif PhotoPlus 5.5

VCW VicMan's Photo Editor
http://www.photo-editor.net/

The GIMP

Thanks again for the information.
One more guidance please.
I clicked on http://www.gimp.org/ and reached to "the GIMP". Finally to
Index of ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.0/ and after that did not know
what is to be done to download the software.

Be aware...The Gimp is a very complicated program.
Read all the documentation because I cannot help
you with the program.

Gimp Tutorials:
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

Read this faq very carefully:
http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/faq.html

If you wish to proceed...go here and download
both files:
http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/stable.html

1) GTK+2 for Windows
(install first)

2) The Gimp for Windows

Proceed at your own risk...good luck.
