Market for Vintage Macs?

Posted: 09-09-2004, 10:45 PM
I have an old Mac SE just sitting in my basement doing absolutely
nothing. Does anyone know if there is a market for such "classics"?

Thanks

ebay is probably your best bet.

Only classic Mac worth anything really is the 128, and it'll still fail to
get you enough to buy an entry-level eMac. SEs are great, but generally
worthless, though the SE/30 has a good following.

If it's working, though, don't chuck it out. It will be worth something o
someone; analogue boards die, floppies fail, SCSI disks pack in - I can't
get enough compact Macs here just for spares.

I use an SE to run a listserver (Macjordomo). Works beautifully on my home
network, connected to the internet.

Sure, the lists that I run are very low volume ... But these old compacts
are sturdy and stable.

You can use it as a word processor or give it to someone who wants to write
a book and needs a simple word processor. Young kids can use it as an intro
to computing - Kid Pix is a great favourite.

Allow me to express surprise that a program such as Kid Pix is "a great
favourite" on a 9" black-and-white machine.

You might check with your local school district to see if they need old
Macs, if even only for parts. I am always suprised by how eagerly my
neighborhood school accepts donations. I give them my old computers,
software, printers, monitors, cables, etc. and they treat me like a
major philanthropist. In addition to a warm, fuzzy feeling, you'll
likely receive a tax deduction worth as much or more than what you might
earn by selling on eBay, without the hassle.
Just a thought,
Moo :-)

when i was in school ('92), IIGs and Plus's were the computers in the Mac
Lab. (My marketing teacher had a Lisa)
Today, the schools likely have PowerPC 601 or greater.

I have a Classic in storage presently, which runs as good today as the day
it come out of the box.
It is running an 'a' version of Word, and Broderbund's Carmen Sandiego v.1
when we move to a bigger place and if the kitchen is larger, i'll likely use
it to keep my recipes on. right now, with 3 macs, 3 cats and 2 people in a
680sq. foot condo, its a little crowded....

Its resale value will be nearly zero - probably less than the
shipping cost if you sell it on eBay.

On the other hand, it can still do useful stuff, if you want to use
it.

Back when my SE was my only Mac, I used to run the following apps:

Claris Works version 2
Claris FileMaker Pro version 2
Microsoft Word version 5
Microsoft Excel version 4

They all ran fine (but slowly, of course) in 4M of memory on both
System 6.0.8 and 7.5.5.

I have an old Mac Classic that made for a great small fishbowl.

There is also MacAquarium, that sells do-it-yourself kits:
