I currently have a system with 4gb memory in it but it only registers
2.86Gb, Motherboard can handle up to 4Gb, is there somehting with XP stopping
this from fully registering.

As I understand, with that much RAM installed on the majority of
motherboards, 1GB or there abouts is automatically mapped to the system and
does not show at boot up.. that is not to say that it is not recognised..
