Maximum size of boot partition

Posted: 07-15-2003, 03:10 AM
Does anyone know if there is a size limitation in XP
Professional for the boot partition. I tried to create a
boot partition of 40 GB on my 120 GB hard drive. XP did
not complain like NT would have, but created a 28.5 GB
partition instead with a 11.5 GB type 77 partition that
appears to be untouchable. No program seem to able to
delete it. Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

Thanks for the prompt response. It was a clean install on
a brand new computer I assembled. Was done using the
bootable CD. No problems were encountered at all during
the entire install. It was completed in about 39 minutes
that XP said it was going to take. XP formatted the drive
(NTFS) for the first ever time. I have also installed all
the latest drivers from the INTEL installation CD for all
on-board components. The machine works great! I just
don't understand why I have 11.5 GB partition that is
absolutely bullet-proof, and why it was created when I
asked for a 40 GB boot partition. XP gave no hint that 40
GB partition was not possible. Thanks again.

Yes. I did. XP did ask me, after detecting the size of my
hard drive, what size partition I wanted to create. I
chose 40 GB (to test XP). It then asked me if I wanted to
format it as NTFS, to which I replied affirmatively. It
then proceeded to format it, and continued with the
installation. Only after the installation was complete and
I tried to format the remaining partition using the Disk
management tool, I discovered the discrepancy. Thanks.
