The maximum sound volume in Windows Media Player 9 is two times lower than in WinDVD.

WMP's sound volume is a factor of speaker volume, computer volume, main
mixer line volume, wave mixer line volume, WMP volume, WMP's EQ, sound card
driver output, and ... I think that's about all.
If all other things are equal, the usual hidden differential is that WMP
uses DirectSound for soudn output, whereas other apps often use waveOut. So
if you switch to use waveOut instead of DSound, that'll get things more
exactly even-

The maximum sound volume in WinDVD 5 with the "Use Hardware Decode
Acceleration" disabled is the same as in Windows Media Player 9. Therefore
the difference is not connected with the type of sound output.
