Maxtor 3000DV Performance

Regardless of the firewire host used, my newly replaced
Maxtor 3000DV tends to experience performance hangs after
several minutes of use. These hangs usually last 5 to 10
seconds and tend to happen in programs such as Vegas Video
3.0 and Sonar XL 2.2. Since most of the obvious has been
ruled out, I would like to know if anyone has suggestions
for resolving this problem and improving performance with
this drive. I have ample hardware and should not be
experiencing the types of bottlenecks this drive seems to
have. Your help is appreciated.
