Maxtor External Drive Support

Posted: 06-20-2006, 01:12 PM
According to the Vista Upgrade Advisor, Vista drivers may not exist for the
USB Controller for my Maxtor OneTouch II external hard drive. Maxtor
confirms no support with the following statement: "I have checked and there
is no date to say when we would support visa." Since this drive is my sole
backup source I guess I'm SOL unless someone else knows different. Comments
welcome. Thanks.

Assuming you're not dumb enough to put Vista on your one and only machine,
and that you are putting it on a dedicated test machine with no data of
importance, what's the difference.

Odds are it would work anyway. My WD external does.

Only under Vista on the extra partition you used for Vista. When you are
back in XP on your primary partition there would be no problem. Backups are
not a big issue for Vista right now anyway because you won't have critical
data in it. That should be on your XP partition or primary computer.

I really don't need your uncalled for sarcasm Tom! Questioning my
intelligence only raises questions about yours IMHO. Thanks for nothing...

Exactly Colin. My mistake for not referring to installing Vista on another
partition. Thanks for your helpful response.

You're right, it was uncalled for. I guess I'm just getting tired of all
the 'Vista killed my machine with all my unbacked up important data' on it
posts. Shouldn't have assumed.

Still think it will work

You might check out this week's feature focus on Backups and try using dvd's
as media.

I think that the lack of drivers would only affect the OneTouch button. My
Maxtor 200GB external (no special buttons or anything) worked as soon as
Vista first booted. More than likely the Mass Storage drivers would kick in
automatically if something else didn't already exist.
