There seems to be quite a lot of problrms posted here with regards to McAfee.
To anyone with these problems, I would suggest typing in "mcafee" in the
search box above to view previous posts/possible resolutions.

As a side note:
when i bought my laptop(with Vista Home Premium), I negotiated a free copy
of Norton Internet Security 2007, even though Mcafee was a 12 month freebee
from my ISP.
As it sems that so many ISP's are giving this away - my thought was that any
potential "hackers" would try and attact McAfe first as so many people seem
to be using it - So I installed Norton instead.
And guess what? - It does everything (exept make breakfast !!)

I'm sure there are other antivirus packages out there just as good.
(as long as there vista compatable).

If anyone does have a McAfee problem, that is subsequently sorted out, it
would be very helpfull to fully document the initial problem AND SUBSEQUENT
SOLUTION back on these pages, for the benefit of others.

At least one individual posted here about severe problems with
Windows Mail caused by Norton Internet Security. The problems did not
go away until he completely uninstalled NIS.

My new Dell OptiPlex came with McAfee pre-installed (three weeks ago). From
the get-go, not only didn't Window Mail NOT work, but it was *SERIOUSLY* not
working! Doing all sorts of strange spastic acrobatics that computers just
do not do. No point in going into details; suffice it to say that Dell
technicians sync'd in so they could SEE my screen, and when they saw what
was happening, they were, like, "Ohhhh myyyy Gawd!!!" They'd never seen
anything LIKE it, and they had absolutely NO clue what to do about it. They
literally gave up, and wished me good luck.

Finally managed to get a smart fellow at Microsoft on the phone ... he
walked me through setting up a completely different Vista login profile, but
BEFORE DOING SO, at HIS suggestion, I completely uninstalled McAfee. After
setting up a new Windows profile, ALL the nightmares with Windows Mail
disappeared; there was absolutely NO QUESTION that the cause of all these
horrors was McAfee.

I have no personal axe to grind with McAfee; indeed, the biggest problem I
ever had on my LAST computer, an XP, was caused by Norton. I'm just stating
the facts. The Microsoft tech suggested I try AVG Free virus-protection;
that's what HE uses.

I really wonder how much ADDITIONAL protection is provided by ANY of these
programs; Vista seems so obsessively layered with protections of its
own......

Yesterday I was invited to...
"RENEW NOW, Save 20% on 2-Year Renewal"

McAfee software came supplied on a trial basis with my Dell PC
but I immediately replaced it with Norton's that came as part of
the BT internet package.

I wrote back...

"I don't think so.
There is mounting evidence, albeit at this point circumstantial,
that your software is responsible for causing problems with
Windows Mail that end up with a user being unable to send
email without a lot of stress and heartache.

Of course Norton causes the same problems.

I haven't had it YET.
Is there a common set of circumstances whereupon
McAfee or Norton screws the database?

We don't know exactly what happens. Both N and M result in wiping out
users's dbx files in OE (not deleting them, but rather erasing their
contents and substituting zeroes. some of the cause of that is OE and the
rest is the other 3rd party stuff interfereing )

Enjoy the OS (as it is) without the nasty AV software that ruins that
potential enjoyment.

Well, I am very happy with Vista and particularly, as I've mentioned before,
keen on the way WM deals with crossposted messages. One thing I don't do
is attempt to keep my email folders particularly spick and span. I don't
bother
to delete stuff just hide it with views even though it is all safely backed
up
in the Gmail archive..

I've found that WM can struggle with particularly large newsgroups

I've seen so little impact from my AV stuff I actually checked to see if it
is actually up and running. Perhaps most of the spam and potentially harmful
stuff has been cleaned by Gmail before being routed through to WM.

I'm still not settled as to whether to let Windows or Norton handle
firewall duties. Currently since I've got a contract with Norton for
18months
and it's doing the AV AFAIK well I think Norton is the convenient choice.
Mind you I'd be delighted to hear that the Windows firewall was up to the
job because I'd like as little as possible additional stuff drowning
vanilla Vista.

Very occasionally WM seems to get it's knickers in a twist and won't let
me close it without the help of task manager but that's a minor 30 second
hassle.

I've had just one BSOD in a month (messing around with an old TV card)
rather than an average one a day with XP.

Something else worth a mention is M$ technical support.
I've been very impressed on the two occasions I've needed hotfixes.
Apart from 2 menus I had to navigate my calls were answered in less
than 30 seconds by competent friendly people and have had the
means to download the patches in my inbox within 5 minutes.
They call back when they say they are going to and then again
a day or so later to check all is well.

For a company with a huge customer base and a relatively
new product having just been released the service was great.

Compared to the usual experience with call centers...
waiting ages for some untrained person to put you on hold.
In a "my time is money " sense Vista/WM has already paid for itself.
