MD2006Free won't boot (at all)

Posted: 12-04-2005, 09:56 AM
I've had MD 2005 free on my laptop (Acer Aspire 1690, dualboot with XP)
No (big) problems. Planning to get MD2006 commercial version so yesterday
I installed Mandriva 2006 Free just to test.

When booting, the screen just goes blank (black)
When booting into failsafe mode it goes;
..................................
BIOS data check successful.
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
_ (blinking cursor)

That's all

I did try reinstalling but same result.
Could it be this kernel doesn't work at all with my laptop?

Ideas most welcome.

Did you check the md5sum of the installation discs (to confirm that they
aren't damaged or corrupt)?

Could there be a problem identifying or configuring your video 'card'
correctly?

Can you still run XP?

Yes, md5sum all checked out OK. (using the CD)

About the video card, I don't know. 2005LE worked OK with just the Custom
choice. (but maybe not optimal). It's an ATI Radeon Mobility X700 / 128MB
if this means anything.

XP boots just fine.

I just did another reinstall using another partition. Same result.

Could this be the bug where the standard Mandriva variant of the kernel
won't work with some pentium mobile processors, and you have to select
the "-up-4GB" variant which will?

Normally the install process will select the correct kernel for you, but
might you have done something that bypassed that?

Haven't tried on a laptop but you might give the vesa driver a try in order
to boot to a gui with somewhat limited capabilities. If you can get to the
command line, a live cd like knoppix is very handy here, try
editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and replace the "ati" driver or whatever its
called, with "vesa". Believe the vesa driver is limited to something like
1024x768x24 so don't try going higher. If you can get to a gui with vesa
then you likely have driver or driver config problems. HTH

Did you try the noapic nolapic switches while booting?

I have tried the 2005LE edition as well on X703 and could not get any normal
screen. Now on 2006 everything seems to work fine. So maybe you have to
switch to the latest one since they use the latest x.org software.

As I understand it I never reach the boot sequence.
In the boot setup Force no APIC and Force No Local APIC is unchecked.

I did yet another install (upgrade that is) and it turns out the vesa driver
is preselected with 1024x768x16. When I use the Test button in the setup
all looks just like usual, that is, coloured stripes all over the screen.

I did everything just as I have from MD 9.1. I can find nowhere where I can
select the kernel so I'm pretty sure I didn't.
