Me to Xp

I backed up some files under Me on Floppies, now with XP
installed, the floppies can not be read. It asks if I
want to format the floppy. What can I do to get the
files from the floppies, other than e-mailing the files
from an older computer with Me? Thanks

It sounds like the read/write heads on either the floppy drive on the Me
machine or the floppy drive on the XP machine are not aligned. Consequently
the disks can't be read on the opposing system. See if the disks can be
opened on a third system. If so the problem might be with the floppy on the
XP drive. As floppy drives become cheaper and cheaper there are more
problems with them.

If you have the desire you can always pull the floppy drive out of the Me
system and attached it to the floppy controller and power cable on the XP
system (just swap it out) then the disks should be readable.

Thanks for the info guys, but I have only one system. I
went from Me to XP, on the same computer. I backed up
some files on the floppy under Me, then formatted the
hard drive and installed XP. After the Xp install was
complete, I tried getting the files from the floppy, and
then it said the floppy is not formatted. I don't have
another computer readily here to get the files with, or I
would for sure. What now? Marc

The question is why is it showing the floppy is not formatted. Maybe the
disk is bad.

Mark,

I am currently investigating this behavior here at Microsoft. The current
hypothesis (when the issue is not traced back to a bad floppy drive or
disk) is that when a file is being written in the 9x codebase that if it is
removed from the drive before the green light turns off, (UI closes before
drive is finished) that something in the first 32 sectors of the disk
becomes corrupt. Windows XP and Windows 2000 will not read the disk if
this corruption is present.

The best work-around I have to offer is try to put the disk in Windows 9x
computer and it should be readable.

Best regards,
