Media Center not playing anything well on Vista Ultimate 64

Posted: 02-10-2007, 09:52 PM
Hello,

My Problem...
... with Media Center goes a bit beyond the problems everyone else seems
to be having. The video on my machine is more or less nonexistant. DVD's
just never start playing through media center nor do mp4's. It isn't just
the video I am having problems with though; the audio file playback is
terrible as well. Music simply stutters about five time per seccond which
makes MC impossible to use. This leads me to believe that it may not be
entirely a video driver problem, but what do I know. Media player performs
exactly the same which makes a bit of sense I suppose. On the possitive
side, CD's play through MC just fine, makes me wonder if I just buy myself a
$250 upgrade for a CD player. =)

My machine...
... is trying to run Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. My hardware consists
of an NVidia nForce 4 SLI X16 mobo, AMD Dual Core 64 bit processor, dual
NVidia 7800 GTX graphics, and an old soundblaster Audigy 2ZS. My system
apparently rates striaght 5.9's on the Windows experience index for whatever
that's worth.

My attempts to fix the problem include...
... updating the bios of my machine, updating all the drivers for my
hardware (which might still be the problem admittedly what with all the
betas), and even tried installing some new codecs. Another attempt that I
have made involved downloading and using Media Center Classic which actually
plays all the mp3's, wma's everything just fine. This also leads me to
believe it's not necessarily the drivers on my system. All the software uses
the same video drivers correct? But again, I am no expert.

And since I am no expert I will ask here on this forum, "Has anyone else had
problems of this degree with Vista 64 and Media Center yet?" More
importantly, is there anything I can do to fix media center and/or media
player?"

Thanks for reading,
Even more thanks for answering,
And I'll send you a pizza or something if you can fix my problem. =)

Chuck

Hi Chuck

I ahve the same issue with a 32 bit home premium, geforce 7600 laptop.
No-one out there has answered me yet. Meanwhile, the VLC player plays
everything easily! available free and works for nearly everything, a temp
solution

I seem to have fixed my own problem. Looks like some of the USB ports on my
system went bad, shorts or some such. I disabled the USB controls for those
ports in the bios and reinstalled windows. Everything is working better now.

Guess I send myself that pizza. =)

Thanks for reading and I hope this helps others out.
