Media Player and power DVD 5

I have windows xp pro. When I put on a DVD in my dvd
player the DVD won't play with either Power DVD or Media
Player. Do I have to disable my anti-virus and get a DVD
decoder. I use to get at least 10 minutes of video and
then the screen would freeze but I would have audio.
Please someone help me.
