Microsoft Windows Update/Automatic Update Failure

Operating System: XP Home addition

I am attempting to do automatic updates and each
installation fails. My computer had an issue with:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\config\system

I resolved this issue using Microsoft Knowledge Base
article - 307545

Now updates will not install if it has to do with the
Windows operating system.

Microsoft Office and Messenger downloaded and installed
updates with no issue. Please help

1) make sure your system clock on your computer is showing the correct
time/date, otherwise update will not work.

2) update page has been sporadic over last week or so with people updating
their OS at the last minute and a supposed DDOS attack on the update servers
beginning on 8/15. Keep trying.
