I am using Word 2002 (XP SP2), but I believe the below option is present
in earlier versions as well.

I went into Tools|Options|Edit and deselected "Typing Replaces
Selection." When I then selected some text and hit the backspace key,
NOTHING happened. When I went back and reselected that option, the
backspace key deleted all the selected text.
