Windows Media Player can play (not record) MIDI.

You can have multiple MIDI-devices in your computer. In
Control_Panel | Sounds_and_Audio_Devices | Audio | MIDI_music_playback you
can select the default device (and consequently see the devices installed).
You'll likely see a device "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth". That is a
software synthesizer that renders the MIDI instructions to digital audio,
but in order to hear that you'll need the digital-to-analog converter that
is the essence of a sound card (and may be integrated on your motherboard).

So you have everything at hand already. But you may want to invest in a
sound card with better quality (better D/A-converter) or other features
(like Dolby surround), in a better rendering engine (software or hardware
synthesizer, including sound card), in software to edit the MIDI files...
