MIDTOWN MADNESS (1 + patch) Keyboard lag!

Posted: 10-28-2003, 12:25 AM
I'm actually running Windows 2000, but I saw THIS THREAD:
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%2...phx.gbl&rnum=1

and I tried everything suggested (I just installed the game today, so
I didn't feel the need to reinstall it) and nothing worked.

The game used to run fine on this machine:

Windows 2000 SP2/3
AbitKX7-333
AMD Thunderbird 1.1Ghz
512 MB PC-133
MS Internet Keyboard w/ IntelliType drivers
3dfx Voodoo 5 5500
Creative SBLive! 5.1

--

But one day (it's been so long now, I don't recall if it just
'happened' or if I installed the game after having it previously
uninstalled for some time) the game had the probelm precisely as is
described on the page I link to above (even after you let off a key,
the game still gets input for as many as ten seconds!).

I have since built an entirely new machine (specs below), but the
problem persists. Is it a problem specifically with Windows 2000
SP3+, because I do recall it working with SP2, and I *thought* it
worked under SP3, although that may have been when it all went
wrong... but if this is a problem, I don't think Microsoft should
overlook it, no matter how old the game is, I still love it! I saw
the disc laying on my shelf today and thought I'd install it... did
so, and have the same problem.

My new system:

Windows 2000 SP4
Abit KX7-333
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
1 GB PC2700
ATi Radeon 9500 Pro w/ Catalyst 3.8 drivers
Same keyboard, same soundcard

Any help would be appreciated!

Try running the game in Windows 98 compatibility mode and see if that works
better.

I used to have the same problem (game working OK in the first place, but
some time later after reinstalling on a different Windows installation
getting a keybord lag), but somehow I got it sorted. Unfortunately I don't
have the game installed right now to test, but I could do that and play
around with it, if compatibility mode does not help it.

Unfortunately (as the first line of my post states) I'm running
Windows 2000. I don't think there is a way to set 98 compatability
mode under Win2K.

I know I posted in the wrong group forum, but the Win2K gaming section
really doesn't have much for traffic.

Thanks for your suggestion though, I really appreciate it! I'll keep
poking around and see if I can figure something out. Any other
tips or suggestions are appreciated as well!

Hi Garrett,

The Windows 2000 Games group doesn't get a lot of peer traffic
per say, however there are experienced professionals there who
answer questions. :-) Compatibility mode *is* available in 2000
since service pack 2 (or 3). Here's the information available:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=279792 Hope that helps! :-)

Excellent! Thanks to both of you (Jimmy and Bernhard) I have solved
my problem!

Using the Jason-sent tips to enable compatibility tab in Windows 2000
(yes, the same thing worked on SP4) and then Bernhards suggestion of
using the Windows 98 Compatibility Layer, the game works flawlessly
once again!

I thank you both so very much! Muy Bien, muy bien!!
