You need to boot from the XP CD and then select new install (do not select repair at
this point). Setup will detect the existing install and ask to repair it, do this
repair. Have your product key ready. This method basically does an XP upgrade over
top of itself.
You will need to install all SP1, IE6 SP1 and all of the windowupdate file again.
Your installed programs should be ok.
BUT... If it was a program causing the problem there are no guarantees that this will
work.
